Armen Sarvazyan was born on July 2, 1939, in Yerevan, Armenia, and passed away at his home in Lambertville, New Jersey, in the early hours of May 28, 2026. He was an extraordinarily creative and kind man who generously shared his wisdom, joy and curiosity with others.

Armen Sarvazyan, Ph.D., D.Sc., was a world-renowned biophysicist, pioneer in molecular and medical acoustics, Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, recipient of the Rayleigh Medal, and Honorary Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. His research helped establish new methods for measuring the mechanical properties of living tissues. His pioneering studies of soft-tissue biomechanics laid the foundation for shear-wave elasticity imaging, a technology he co-invented that is now widely used in medical ultrasound and diagnostic imaging. He also developed innovative ultrasonic methods for studying biomolecular interactions and investigating the role of water in biological systems.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Sarvazyan authored more than 200 scientific publications, edited several scientific books, and was awarded more than 100 U.S. and international patents. He founded Artann Laboratories, Inc. and co-founded several companies advancing elastography technologies. Through his research, inventions, and mentorship, he made lasting contributions to biomedical engineering, medical ultrasound, and diagnostic medicine.

Art was his lifelong passion. In the last decade of his life, Armen devoted himself to transforming his New Jersey property into a landscape of gardens, rock compositions, and large-scale concrete sculptures. He built the Temple of Arts, inspired by traditional Armenian architecture, and filled it with his original wood carvings and other works https://www.armensarvazyan.net/ His artistic creations reflected the same curiosity and appreciation of nature that characterized his scientific work. His art was exhibited in galleries and exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad.

Armen leaves behind a legacy of scientific discovery, artistic creativity, and devotion to the family. Beyond his many accomplishments, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; a family patriarch whose generosity and support touched the lives of relatives, friends, colleagues, and students. He is survived by his wife, Tatyana Sarvazyan; his daughters, Narine and Noune; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
